This video was produced by Levees.Org with assistance from a senior government public policy class at Newman High School in New Orleans. The video was loaded onto YouTube on Nov 5, 2007 and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) promptly sent a letter to the fledging grassroots group and the high school kids threatening them with lawsuit if they didn't remove the video from YouTube. Flanked by two prominent law firms offering their services pro bono, Levees.Org rejected the ASCE's demand to remove the video from the internet citing Louisiana's anti-SLAPP statute. This law is designed to weed out lawsuits by giant corporations designed to chill public participation on matters of public significance.
The Netherlandss built the "Gold Standard" for Flood Protection in the 1950's. The Dutch Engineers state that "flood prevention is not a high priority in the U.S." The Netherlands is half the size of New Jersey, the country was protected in the 1950's after their disaster. It has been effective for over 50 years now. The U.S. government must be pressured into protecting it's people and it's cities NOW. REBUILD NEW ORLEANS LEVEES NOW!!!!
All 50 states have levees in disrepair, the government has not maintained them, nor updated them in 40 years. all states are at risk, especially california, but also washington, omaha, and others. Sign petitions, speak up now.
This is good, though painfully true. It reminds me of a T-shirt I saw on a man in devastated south Louisiana. It said:
